Introduction
The Andhra Pradesh State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) develops textbooks for classes 1 through 10 that are used in government schools across the state. These textbooks cover subjects like English, Math, Science, Social Studies and Telugu.
The Social Studies textbooks include content on history, civics and geography. The civics portions introduce students to topics like the Indian Constitution, the structure and function of government institutions, citizens' rights and duties, and more. This provides important foundational knowledge about the government and political system in India and Andhra Pradesh.
The textbooks are frequently updated and revised by SCERT to align with the latest educational policies and curriculum guidelines issued by the state and central government. They aim to provide students with engaging and accessible content to support their learning and understanding of the political system and their role as citizens.
The textbooks grow in complexity and depth across the grade levels, building on prior knowledge each year. By classes 9 and 10, students have a robust understanding of India's political journey, the workings of the government, and contemporary issues facing the country. This equips them for more advanced study in grades 11 and 12 under the AP Government curriculum.
Class 1
In class 1, students are introduced to basic concepts about the Indian government and democracy. The major topics covered are:

- Three main organs of government - legislature, executive, judiciary

Students learn about the basic structure of the Indian democratic system and the key ideas like people's participation, equality, and freedom. The textbook helps build a foundational understanding of democracy as "government of the people, by the people, for the people". Students are taught about the concepts through stories and examples to make it easy to understand.
The key skills developed in Class 1 are:
- Ability to distinguish between different forms of government
- Understanding the meaning of democracy
- Awareness of the three organs of government
- Appreciation of citizen's role and rights in a democracy
The Class 1 textbook lays a strong base for students to understand more complex topics in later grades by first building a simple understanding of democracy, government and active citizenship.
